About the initiative

Membrane proteins are among the most functionally important yet technically challenging targets in proteomics — they are difficult to solubilise and characterise using standard approaches. The MPI addressed this by coordinating a multi-laboratory effort across AOHUPO member countries to develop and validate a standardised methodology for membrane proteome analysis.
A key output of the initiative was the preparation and characterisation of a shared carbonate-washed membrane standard, which was distributed to participating laboratories across the region for comparative analysis. This approach — distributing a common reference material — allowed the initiative to benchmark methodologies across different instruments, institutions, and countries.

The initiative also maintained a coherent link with the AOHUPO Chemical Proteomics Initiative (CPI), sharing resources, data, and informatics tools, and exploring the functional interaction between membrane proteins and small bioactive molecules.
